What is the difference between Solar Heating System and Solar Photovoltaic System for home?

Solar Heating System utilizes solar concentrators to convert sunlight to heat, which becomes the source of water heating system. The concept is similar to using magnifying glass to start a paper fire. The hot water is then stored in a water tank for later use.

Solar Photovoltaic System converts sunlight to direct current, which is similar to electricity from battery. The direct current is then converted to alternate current and connected to existing electrical circuit for a property. The electricty is not stored and it will be consumed by the property and neighbouring community.

If I have a solar PV system, do I still need to use the electricity from TNB?

Yes, the reason is the solar electricity is generated during day time and it is not stored for later use during the night. Therefore, you still need to use the electricity from TNB at least during the night.

How does the NEM scheme benefits the system owners?

With the NEM scheme/policy, it allows an eligible consumer to install a Solar PV System primarily for own use and can export any excess solar power generated back to the TNB grid in exchange for credit and it can be used to offset their electricity bill.

Can I use solar electricity to reduce my electricity bill?

Yes. You still need to pay for the amount of electricity consumed. You can use the credit received from TNB for the solar energy generated to pay for the electricity consumed. In some cases, you may be able to save up to 90% of your monthly bill.

What is the capacity that I need?

In most cases, it largely depends on your budget. As a rules of thumb, 5kW for a double storey link house and 12kW for a bungalow, 24kW and above for commercial or factory building.

What if I want to sell my house which already has a solar PV system installed?

The new owner of the Premise may apply to continue with the programme for the remaining duration of the period of operation under NEM Rakyat

How long can the solar PV last?

It can last longer than 25 years. Solar PV module comes with at least 10 years of product warranty and 25 years performance warranty. However, the performance of the Solar PV module will degrade gradually at around 0.8% annually.
